paper explosion |
I absolutely LOVE the Bookmobile project. AND...forgive me if you've addressed this elsewhere, but what to do about paper, trees, resources? Paper use continues to rise, I believe, as more people print things on their own rather than borrow someone else's or read an already-printed journal or book. Is there a way to encourage more access, more reading, more do-it-yourself action -- and tie it in to some kind of sustainable use of resources? digital paper...recycled paper...other ideas?

I am sensitive to this issue, but still favor the project strongly. I'm not sure that anyone has suggested NOT sharing these books, my advice is always to
pass it on when done.
In my personal life, I have cancelled my newspaper subscriptions (even Sunday :( ), take a canvas bag to the grocer, and recycle all of my paper. I realize that this doesn't
make it right, but it is a matter of choice.
In my little town in Tennessee, I recently met a 6 yr old girl who had NEVER had a book of her own at home...I was thunderstruck. Sorry, but for right now anyway...I'm still strongly in favor.

More forests left standing |
If all the paper that was printed was read, there would be alot more forests standing. Making a book for yourself takes some commitment (more than hitting the print button on a word processor), so I think we would not be wasting trees with this print-on-demand system. in fact, being able to read a book on screen until you are committed to printing-binding-cutting may just be the type of system we need to reduce paper waste.

What about those people who cannot read a story sitting at a computer? For people who don't have access to a computer, this is a great program that they have going. As well, how long can you sit in front of a monitor staring at text? I much prefer a real, bound book. Something I can curl up with and read anywhere.
Though I do agree with the fact that a great deal of resources are being put into this, I believe that the benefits are greater than the negatives.
Who knows, maybe they'll start cloning trees with advanced aging processes so they can make paper at increased rates without having to cut down many more existing trees. ;p
